The bridge in the other direction: a SlimSAS 8x host connector (SFF-8654, 74-pin) splits its eight lanes into two MCIO 4x ports (SFF-TA-1016, 38-pin). Use this assembly to attach Gen5 MCIO devices — NVMe adapter cards, front bays, backplanes — to a controller or switch card that still speaks SlimSAS. It is the mirror image of the MCIO-to-SlimSAS fanout and covers the transition window where both standards live in the same chassis.

Does not work with
- MCIO 8x (74-pin) device ports — use an 8x-to-8x cable for those.
- SAS-only hosts driving NVMe devices — the protocol follows the host port.
- Drives connected directly — each MCIO end must meet a port on a card, cage or backplane.
Typical deployments
- Controller to Gen5 bays. A SlimSAS-generation card feeding two MCIO U.2 adapters or front bays.
- Mixed-generation chassis. Keep existing SlimSAS cabling on the host side while moving devices to MCIO.
- Balanced lane use. Split one x8 port into two independent x4 devices instead of adding a switch.
Frequently asked questions
How is this different from the MCIO x8 to 2×SlimSAS x4 cable?
Direction and host standard. That cable starts from an MCIO host; this one starts from a SlimSAS 8x host and ends in two MCIO 4x ports. Pick the one whose host connector matches your board.
Do both MCIO ports run at Gen5?
Yes. Each leg is a full x4 PCIe 5.0 link, subject to what the host port and the device negotiate.
Can the two legs go to different devices?
Yes. They are independent x4 links — a U.2 adapter on one and an M.2 card or bay on the other works fine, as long as the host port supports the devices.
Will it work in a PCIe 4.0 system?
Yes. On a Gen4 host both legs negotiate to 16 GT/s, and on Gen3 hardware to 8 GT/s. The cable is passive and passes whatever the host and the devices agree on.
