The mirror image of a breakout cable. Four discrete 7-pin SATA connectors on the controller side fan into a single SFF-8643 (MiniSAS HD) plug that lands on the backplane. Cages that expose one 8643 for four drive bays expect exactly this wiring — and a forward breakout cable will not do the same job simply because the connectors fit.
This is the reverse breakout
- Four SATA ports in, one 8643 out. Use it when the controller only has individual SATA headers but the cage terminates in a 36-pin MiniSAS HD plug. The four SATA ends sit on the controller; the 8643 end sits on the backplane.
- Not a flipped forward cable. We sell the forward version as a separate SKU, and the difference is more than which end you point at the drives. Order by where your SFF-8643 physically sits and the right part arrives first time.
- Seating matters more than people expect. The 8643 shell has a latch bar; on a backplane mounted behind a fan wall it is easy to leave it half engaged. Four drives that all fail to appear is usually this, not four dead drives.
- 75 cm of reach. Enough to run from a front-loaded controller up and around to a mid-chassis backplane without pulling the connector under tension.

Typical deployments
- Server backplane fed by a board with only SATA headers. A common layout on entry storage boards: four SATA ports on the board, one 8643 on the cage. This cable is the entire adapter.
- Drive-less rebuilds and lab cages. Bench setups where the cage and the board come from different generations and only the connector standard is shared.
- Replacing a lost OEM reverse cable. Same connector pair, same 75 cm reach, same four-leg fan-out — a direct replacement when the original part number is not orderable.
Frequently asked questions
How is this different from the forward breakout cable?
Direction of the SATA ends. On the forward version the SFF-8643 goes to the controller and the SATA ends to the drives; here the SATA ends go to the controller and the 8643 goes to the backplane. They are two separate SKUs, and ordering by "where is my 8643" gets it right every time.
Can I just flip the cable around and use it as a forward breakout?
We do not recommend planning a build that way. The two cables are specified and sold separately for a reason; if your 8643 is on the host, order the forward version — it is the same price.
Will it work with SAS drives?
No. The fan-out legs are 7-pin SATA connectors. SAS drives need SFF-8482 ends, which is a different assembly.
How do I confirm my backplane takes four SATA into one 8643?
Count the SATA-equivalent ports the cage presents. If one 36-pin MiniSAS HD connector covers four bays, this is the cable. If it covers eight bays from two 8643 connectors, you need two cables and eight free SATA ports.
Only three of four drives appear. Where do I look?
Reseat the 8643 latch first, then check the fourth SATA leg at the controller. Swapping two legs tells you in seconds whether the fault follows the cable or stays with the drive bay.
Does the length include the connectors?
No. 75 cm is cable length from shell to shell; the connector bodies add a few centimetres at each end when you are measuring clearance inside a chassis.
