Four SATA drives, one connector on the controller. This is the forward breakout: the SFF-8643 (MiniSAS HD) plug goes into the RAID card, HBA or motherboard header, and the four 7-pin SATA ends go to the drives. 75 cm overall. The single most common way to get this purchase wrong is to buy it for a backplane — read the next section before you order.

Which end goes where

  • The SFF-8643 end belongs on the host. Controller, HBA, or a motherboard header labelled MiniSAS HD. Four drives then hang off the four SATA ends, each on its own link.
  • If your SFF-8643 is on the backplane, this is the wrong cable. A backplane that exposes one 8643 for a four-bay cage needs the reverse breakout, which we sell as a separate SKU. The connectors are identical; the cable is not interchangeable just because it fits.
  • Four independent links, not a port multiplier. Each SATA leg is its own port as far as the controller is concerned, so drives enumerate individually, hot-swap normally and spin up in whatever stagger the controller applies.
  • 12 Gb/s generation connector, 6 Gb/s drives. SFF-8643 is the 12 Gb/s SAS connector generation; the SATA legs run at the drive's own rate, which today means up to 6 Gb/s. You are not limited by the connector, you are limited by the drive and the port.

Compatibility

Works with

  • RAID cards, HBAs and motherboards with an SFF-8643 (MiniSAS HD) output
  • Up to four SATA hard drives or SSDs with standard 7-pin data connectors
  • Any chassis where the drives are cabled directly, with no backplane in between

Does not work with

  • Backplanes whose SFF-8643 port faces the drives — use the reverse breakout version instead
  • SAS drives: the four fan-out legs are 7-pin SATA, so a SAS drive needs a cable with SFF-8482 connectors
  • More than four drives, or a single 8643 port split into more than four links

Typical deployments

  • Tower or rack build with direct-cabled drives. Four drives in a cage with no backplane, one cable from the HBA to all four. Fewer connectors, less cable clutter, one part number to keep in stock.
  • Adding drives to a workstation board. Boards that expose a MiniSAS HD header for four SATA ports instead of four separate SATA sockets — common on workstation and embedded boards where board space is tight.
  • Replacing four separate SATA cables. One 8643 connector at the card instead of four, which matters when the card edge is crowded or the cabling has to pass through a tight bulkhead opening.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know whether I need the forward or the reverse breakout?

Look at where the SFF-8643 connector sits. On a controller or motherboard, you want this forward cable. On a backplane, you want the reverse version. The SATA ends always belong on the discrete-port side, whichever end that is.

Can I connect fewer than four drives?

Yes. Unused SATA legs simply stay unplugged; the controller sees four ports and only the populated ones link up. Nothing needs terminating.

Can I run SAS drives on it?

No. The fan-out side is four 7-pin SATA connectors, and a SAS drive has a single combined SAS connector (SFF-8482). SAS drives need a breakout with SFF-8482 ends; write to us and we will point you at the right one.

Is there a separate sideband cable?

No. This is a data-only assembly: four lanes leaving one 8643 shell. There is no separate sideband lead to route.

What is the 75 cm measured from?

From the SFF-8643 shell to the end of the SATA connectors, cable length only — not including the strain relief or the connector bodies.

A drive is not detected. What should I check first?

In order: the 8643 plug fully latched at the controller, the drive receiving power, and the controller port enabled in firmware. If three of four drives work, swap the SATA legs around — that tells you immediately whether the fault is in the cable or in one drive port.

In the box

  • 1 × MiniSAS HD (SFF-8643) to 4 × SATA breakout cable, 75 cm (SKU B0CHMDQ2P7)

Every cable is continuity- and pinout-tested before it ships and carries a 24-month warranty. If a link does not train, send us the controller model and the backplane part number before returning anything — in most cases the cable is the wrong variant for the port, not faulty, and we would rather tell you that up front.
